Residence
Pittsford, New York
New 4-bedroom residence including: home offices, exercise
room, garage barns, and extensive gardens.
4,600 sq. ft.
1993 – 94
Site
From a high cornfield looking west over rolling cornfields
to the City of Rochester, New York, the house presents a configuration
of smaller roofs cascading toward the rural roadway below.
The house is carefully oriented toward the sun's progress,
and accommodates a classical Japanese garden and pond at the
rear of the house.
Building
By adapting traditional Japanese farmhouse language and forms,
the house is a variation on local farm structures. The plan
of the house provides large and dramatic 'public' space for
entertaining, and abundant indoor and outdoor private, contemplative
space for working, sleeping and relaxing.
Materials
Recycled fir timbers and interior trim, recycled redwood exterior
trim, synthetic stucco, cherry and tile flooring, hemlock
barn and fencing, synthetic stone chimney.
